Editorial Policy

How we create and maintain our guidance.

How we write

  • We base guidance on widely accepted building practice and published guidance from engineers, home inspectors and manufacturers.
  • Where sources disagree, for example on width thresholds, we say so and lean toward the more cautious advice.
  • We clearly label rules of thumb as rules of thumb.
  • Cost figures are ranges compiled from published US sources and are dated. Local prices vary.

Safety first

Whenever a crack could indicate structural movement, we recommend an independent licensed structural engineer, someone who isn't selling the repair. Our Crack Checker is designed to err on the side of caution.

Independence

We may in future earn commissions from some product links or connect readers with contractors. If we do, we'll disclose it on the page, and it won't change our recommendations.

Corrections
